A director in UPMC's Information Services Division has been recognized by the military for her support of an employee who also serves in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Andrew West, who in addition to working for UPMC is an Army captain, nominated Karen Malik for the Patriot Award for her support of his often unpredictable work as an Army Reserve Signal Officer. Malik was recently presented with the award by Nicholas Krawec, representing Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in Western Pennsylvania.

“Even on short notice when my orders and training dates have changed, Karen has been extremely flexible on scheduling," West said. "I also deeply appreciate her understanding and compassion. Her support means less pressure for myself and, in turn, my family during what is already a stressful time as we prepare for my upcoming deployment."
ESGR was established by the Department of Defense in 1972, and works to promote understanding, cooperation, and support between civilian employers and members of the National Guard and Reserve throughout the U.S. The ESGR recognizes supervisors and employers through a series of awards ranging from the Patriot Award geared to individual supervisors through the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. government to employers for their outstanding support of employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. These awards are particularly meaningful, since the nominations are made by members of the military, who personally nominate their employers.
