UPMC and Global Links: Saving lives and saving the planet

By Marilyn Pfaff and Tim Betler

What happens to some of UPMC's equipment when it's no longer used by the health system? For the last decade, much of it has gone to Global Links, an organization that takes the donations to poor communities in Latin American and the Caribbean where medical supplies are desperately needed.

Business units across the health system gather durable, reusable medical equipment for Global Links. In 2012, UPMC collected and donated close to 120 tons of reusable material to the organization.

Above, Angela Garcia of Global Links, Allison Robinson of UPMC Environment Initiatives, and Mary Lee Epps of UPMC McKeesport demonstrate one example of how UPMC recycles and repurposes equipment rather than send it to landfills.

Do you recycle at home? On this Earth Day, share with us in the comments below some ways you help the environment.
