Recently, UPMC's tax-exempt status has come under scrutiny. The challenge to this status appears to be based on misconceptions about what it means to be nonprofit and how UPMC meets — and exceeds — those standards. UPMC understands, honors, and adheres at all times to the laws that grant it and its hospitals exemption from certain taxes. UPMC spokesman Paul Wood explains.
